WebP was designed for the web, and it does that job well. Sites serve it because it produces smaller files than JPG at the same quality, which means faster pages on a mobile connection. Every current browser displays it without a problem.
The difficulty starts once the file leaves the browser. A WebP saved to your phone and then attached to a form, sent to a print shop, or opened in an older photo viewer often fails, and the error message rarely explains why.
Where WebP is rejected
- Government and exam portals. Almost all accept JPG only, with PNG sometimes allowed and WebP never.
- Print services. Shops and online printers usually expect JPG or PDF.
- Older desktop software. Legacy viewers and office suites often have no WebP support at all.
- Some messaging and email clients. The file sends but may not preview for the recipient.
Keeping quality in the conversion
