About Malampuzha Dam
Malampuzha Dam is the largest reservoir in Kerala, located near Palakkad in south India with the scenic hills of the Western Ghats in the background. The project consists of a combination of a masonry dam and an earthen dam crossing the Malampuzha River, a tributary of Bharathappuzha. The foundation stone for the project was laid on March 27, 1949, and the dam was inaugurated on October 9, 1955. It is the first large-scale irrigation system attempted in Kerala State, featuring a network of canal systems that serve to irrigate farmland while the reservoir provides drinking water to Palakkad and surrounding villages.
The location features numerous surrounding attractions and facilities such as the Malampuzha Garden, a ropeway above the gardens, a snake park and snake rehabilitation centre, a freshwater aquarium, a children's park, a Japanese garden, the sculpture of Yakshi, a rock garden, a hanging bridge, an amusement park, boating facilities, lights at night, a swimming pool, and the Kava and catchment area. Visitors should note that Malampuzha Dam will remain closed till further notice for maintenance work under the Government of India Swadesh Darshan 2.0 Scheme.
