Framing the photo correctly
The crop box is locked to the passport ratio, so all you control is what goes inside it. Centre the head horizontally, leave a small gap above the hair, and let the shoulders fill the bottom edge. The face should dominate the frame rather than sit as a small shape in the middle.
Exam bodies commonly ask for the face to occupy around three quarters of the photograph. A crop taken from a distant group photo will not meet that, no matter how carefully it is sized afterwards.
Taking a photo that will pass
- Stand against a plain white wall. Step forward a little so your shadow falls behind you rather than on the wall.
- Use daylight from the front. Facing a window gives even light. Overhead bulbs cast shadows under the eyes.
- Look straight at the camera. Head level, eyes open, neutral expression, both ears visible.
- Remove caps and dark glasses. Religious headwear is generally allowed as long as the face is clear.
- Have someone else take it. From roughly a metre away, at eye level, so the proportions look natural.
Why photos get rejected
The most common reasons have nothing to do with file size. A photograph of an existing printed photograph is rejected outright by several exam bodies. So are side facing shots, blurred images, and photographs where the face is too small within the frame.
Some portals also require a recent photograph, often taken within the last six months, and a few now capture the photo live through a webcam instead of accepting an upload at all. Read the instructions for your form before preparing anything.

What is the standard passport photo size in India?
Most forms and passport applications use 3.5 by 4.5 centimetres. At the 300 DPI print resolution usually assumed, that works out to roughly 413 by 531 pixels.
Can I use a selfie?
Technically yes, but selfies are taken close to the face, which distorts the nose and forehead, and are often shot at an angle. A photo taken by someone else from a metre or so away looks far more natural.
What background does a passport photo need?
Plain white or a very light plain colour. Patterned walls, curtains and doorways are rejected, and a busy background also wastes file size that the face could be using.
Can I wear glasses in the photo?
Rules differ by authority. Many allow clear glasses provided there is no glare and the eyes are fully visible, while some exam bodies ask for them to be removed. Check the instructions for your specific form.
Do I need to print it at an exact size?
For a form upload, no. The pixel dimensions and file size are what the portal checks. Physical size only matters when you are printing the photo for a paper application.
Can I get several copies on one sheet?
