Where these hashtags come from

Most hashtag generators glue your words together in a few dozen ways and call it a result. The output looks plausible and tells YouTube nothing it did not already read in your title.

This tool reads the tags attached to videos currently trending on YouTube India, refreshed every day, and converts the relevant ones into hashtag form. The number beside a hashtag shows how many trending videos in your category are using that phrase right now.

How many hashtags to use

YouTube counts a maximum of fifteen per video. Cross that line and it discards the lot, which is a strange penalty but a real one.

In practice three to five well chosen hashtags do more than fifteen loosely related ones. Only the first three appear above your title, so those three carry almost all the visible weight.

FormatSuggested countWhy
Long-form video3–5Title and description already carry the topic
Shorts2–4Less metadata available, so each one counts more
Live stream2–3Discovery is mostly through subscribers and notifications

Where to put them

Add hashtags at the end of your description. The first three become clickable links above your video title, so put your most specific ones there rather than your broadest.

Hashtags in the title itself also work, but they consume characters you usually want for the title. Most creators are better off keeping the title clean and letting the description carry them.

Picking the right mix

A useful set covers three levels. Start narrow with something that describes exactly what your video is. Add one or two for the broader topic. Finish with a category level tag if you have room.

Using only large, high volume hashtags puts your video in a pool with millions of others where nobody will find it. The narrow ones are where discovery actually happens.

The number beside each hashtag tells you the pool size. A hashtag on twenty trending videos is crowded. One on two is a place you might actually be seen.

Hashtags on Shorts

Shorts carry less metadata than long-form videos, so hashtags do proportionally more work. Two or three that describe the content precisely is the pattern that holds up.

The old habit of adding #shorts to everything is no longer necessary. YouTube identifies the format from aspect ratio and duration. It costs you nothing to include it, but it is not earning its slot either.

What to avoid

Hashtags that have nothing to do with your content breach YouTube policy, as does packing the description with dozens of them. Both can lead to a video being removed rather than merely ignored.

Chasing an unrelated trending hashtag for the traffic is the most common version of this mistake. The traffic arrives, bounces immediately, and the retention damage costs more than the views were worth.

Frequently asked questions

How many hashtags can a YouTube video have?

YouTube counts a maximum of fifteen. Add more and it ignores all of them, so restraint matters more than volume.

Where do hashtags actually appear?

The first three from your description show up as clickable links above your video title. The rest work as metadata but stay inside the description.

Do hashtags help videos rank?

They help with discovery rather than ranking. Clicking a hashtag opens a feed of videos carrying it, which is a small but real traffic source on narrow topics.

Are hashtags different on Shorts?

They matter more on Shorts because the format has less other metadata to work with. Two or three tightly relevant hashtags is the usual pattern.

Should I use #shorts on every Short?

It no longer helps the way it did in 2021. YouTube identifies Shorts by their aspect ratio and length now. It does no harm, but it is not doing much work either.

Can hashtags get a video removed?

Misleading hashtags, excessive hashtags and hashtags unrelated to the content all breach YouTube policy and can lead to removal. Keep them honest.
